THREATS

Illegal Wildlife Poaching

Poaching is the illegal hunting, killing or capturing of wild animals, in violation of local, state, federal or international law. Activities that are considered poaching include killing an animal out of season, without a license, with a prohibited weapon, or a prohibited manner such as jacklighting.

Over the past few decades, corrupt government officials have played a large part in allowing criminal syndicate members throughout Eastern and Southern Africa to traffic wildlife parts and even aid poaching and trafficking suspects. Law enforcement officials have even been implicated in the thefts from secure stockpiles and of trafficking ivory themselves. Diplomatic immunity and government ties have also been abused by a number of individuals to openly transfer wildlife products out of Africa.
Habitat Loss

Animals losing their natural habitats because of the growing needs of humans is probably the greatest threat to the variety of wildlife on this planet today. It is identified as a main threat to 85% of all species described in the IUCN’s Red List (those species officially classified as “Threatened” and “Endangered”). The world’s forest, swamps, plains, lakes, and other habitats continue to disappear as they are harvested for human consumption and cleared to make way for agriculture, housing, roads, pipelines and the other hallmarks of industrial development.

Habitat loss can usually be placed in three categories. There is habitat destruction which is done by completely removing trees and plants and instantly changing the landscape. Mass deforestation by cutting down trees is a prime example of this. Another type of habitat loss takes place by altering the land in a way that confuses the animals and disrupts their natural way of living. This is called habitat fragmentation and it occurs when we create roads and place attractions in the midst of woodlands and other natural areas.

Suki Waterhouse for I'm Not A Trophy

Only 7,100 cheetahs left in the wild.

A marvel of evolution. Cheetah’s are the fastest land animal with accelerations of 70mph that leave automobiles in the dust.

As a popular wildlife keystone predator, the cheetah is incredibly important to its habitat and savanna ecosystem. Grazers such as zebras and wildebeest will become overpopulated which leads to overgrazing of the grasslands. Overgrazing can lead to erosion that can allow shrub growth to take over once lush grasslands. Without grass cover, other important species of the savanna ecosystem can become threatened or extinct.
